You may have seen that some South Dakota teams have qualified for Presidents Cup, and some teams have qualified for the National Championship Series. To clear up any confusion, here is the explanation of each event, and how you qualify for it.
The policy in South Dakota is that the State Champions qualify automatically for Presidents Cup.
If there is a team that has has proven that they can compete at the elite level, they are able to petition the South Dakota State Soccer Association to compete in the National Championship Series.
In 2018, DASC sent eight teams to Presidents Cup, and three teams to the National Championship Series.
This is a tournament is open to teams aged U13 and older. It involves one team from each state. The 1st step in this tournament is Presidents Cup Regionals. DASC sent eight teams to Presidents Cup Regionals in 2018. The U13 Girls team won and have been crowned Presidents Cup Midwest Region Champions. They have qualified to play in Presidents Cup Nationals. The winner of Presidents Cup Nationals will be crowned Presidents Cup National Champion.
This tournament is open to teams aged U13 and older. This is the event is designed for the elite teams in the nation. It is a step above Presidents Cup. Each state can send one team to the National Championship Series. The 1st step in this event is the Regional Championship. In 2017, Sioux Falls hosted the Region II Championship. The winner of each Regional Championship qualifies for the National Championship Tournament and the opportunity to be crowns US Youth Soccer National Champions.
